Privacy Policy
Last updated October 13, 2026
The short version
- We use your phone number to sign you in, and we store the numbers of the people you choose to like.
- Your likes are visible only to you. Nobody finds out you liked them unless they like you back.
- Sarang never reads your address book. You pick people one at a time, and their names stay on your phone.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, or use analytics or tracking.
- You can delete your account in the app at any time.
This policy covers the Sarang app and trysarang.com ("Sarang", "we", "us"). It explains what we collect, why, who can see it, and how to delete it. If you have a question, email hello@trysarang.com.
What we collect
Your phone number
Your phone number is your account. We confirm it's yours with a one-time code, sent by WhatsApp to Indian numbers and by text message elsewhere.
The people you like
When you like someone, we store their phone number and when you liked them. If you choose to say how you met, we also store that: where (school, college, work, neighborhood, friends or other), a place name, a year, and whether to show it as a hint.
When you remove a like, we keep a record of it, and its spot stays taken for 7 days. This stops people adding and removing likes to find out who likes them.
Matches
When two people like each other, we record the match and when it happened. We don't record who liked first.
Discover, if you use it
Discover is optional. If you create a Discover profile, we store:
- your first name, and your last name if you add it, and how you want your name shown
- your date of birth, gender, and who you'd like to meet
- a photo, if you add one, and who can see it
- the city you choose (never your GPS location)
- your education and income range, if you add them, and who can see them
- your search preferences: distance or places, age range, and any minimums
- your answers to the Discover questions, which cover topics like money, family, children, diet, and drinking or smoking
- the people you like or pass on in Discover, and whether you've shared your number with a match
To add a photo, your phone's photo picker opens and only the photo you pick is uploaded.
Blocks and reports
If you block or report someone, from Discover or from a match, we store that. A report includes where it came from and any reason you give, so we can review it.
Purchases
If you subscribe to extra likes, the App Store or Google Play takes the payment; we never see your card or payment details. RevenueCat checks the subscription for us, and we store that your account has extra likes and until when. RevenueCat knows your account only by a random account ID, not your phone number.
Notifications
If you turn on notifications, we store a push token, an address for your phone that lets us send it a notification. We only send one when you get a match, and it says only "You have something new."
What stays on your phone
When you add someone, your phone's own contact picker opens and Sarang only receives the one contact you pick. Sarang never asks for access to your address book. The name you have saved for each person you like is stored on your phone, so the app can show it, and is never sent to us. Sarang also uses your phone's region settings to show distances, dates and currencies.
What we don't collect
We don't collect your address book, your location, or your messages. When you message a match, it happens in your own messaging app. We only have a photo of you if you add one to Discover. The app has no analytics, advertising or tracking tools.
The website
trysarang.com has no cookies, analytics or forms. Like any website, the services that deliver it (Cloudflare, and Google Fonts for the typeface) receive basic request details such as your IP address.
How we use it
- To run Sarang: signing you in, finding matches, showing hints, and the Discover feed.
- To keep it safe: enforcing the like limit and blocks, filtering offensive words, and reviewing reports.
- To reply when you contact us.
We don't sell your data or use it for advertising.
Who can see what
- People you like don't see that you liked them unless they like you back. When they join Sarang, they may see that someone likes them, and your hint about where you met if you chose to leave one, but never your name or number.
- Matches from likes see each other's phone numbers. You each added the other's number, so you already have them.
- Other Discover users see your name as you choose to show it (first name, initials or none), your age (not your date of birth), your city, a distance rounded to 5 km, your education and income only if you choose to show them, and how many of your answers agree with theirs and on which topics. They never see your answers. Your photo is shown as you choose: to people you're shown to in Discover, only to Discover matches, or to nobody. A Discover match sees your phone number only if you choose to share it.
- Matches from likes never see your Discover photo, so a friend can't tell you use Discover.
- People you know: if you turn on "Hide me from people I know", people you've liked and people who've liked you won't see you in Discover.
- People you block aren't told. A block hides you from each other everywhere in Sarang, and you can't match again.
- We can access the data we store, to run Sarang, investigate reports, and meet legal obligations.
Who we share it with
We use these services to run Sarang. They handle your data only on our behalf.
- Supabase hosts our database, sign-in and Discover photos, on servers in Mumbai, India.
- Twilio sends your sign-in codes by text message or WhatsApp. WhatsApp is run by Meta.
- RevenueCat checks in-app purchases with the App Store and Google Play.
- Expo delivers notifications to your phone, through Apple's and Google's notification services.
- Cloudflare hosts trysarang.com, and Google Fonts serves its typeface.
We may also disclose data if the law requires it.
How long we keep it, and deleting it
We keep your data while you have an account. To delete your account, go to Settings in the app and tap Delete account.
Deleting your account removes your account and phone number, your likes, matches and hints, your Discover profile, photo, answers and preferences, your Discover likes and passes, the blocks you made, your notification settings, and your extra likes (you can restore your subscription on a new account). Some things stay:
- a record that your phone number's like spots are in use, so the like limit still applies if you sign up again within 7 days
- blocks other people made against you, kept by your phone number, so they still apply if you sign up again
- reports you made or received, without your account attached
- RevenueCat's record of your subscription, under your random account ID, so you can restore it on a new account
- likes other people made for your number, which belong to them until they remove them
You can also delete just your Discover profile, from Discover settings. Signing out keeps your account and likes.
When someone is reported, we may receive an alert that says only how many reports are waiting, with no names, numbers or report text.
Your choices
- See and change your likes in the app, and change or hide your Discover profile at any time.
- Turn notifications off in your phone's settings.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, or to correct or delete it, by emailing hello@trysarang.com. We'll confirm the account's phone number is yours before acting.
Security
Rules in our database let each person read only their own records, and all connections are encrypted. No system is perfectly secure, so if we learn of a breach that affects you, we'll tell you.
Age
Sarang is for people 18 and over. If you believe someone under 18 is using it, email us and we'll delete their account.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. For significant changes, we'll let you know before they take effect.
